Like a doctor checks up the patient before a big surgical operation, every website needs some checks up before you start working hard on your SEO strategy, some factors are always very critical:
1 – Domain Name
Some search engines still gives higher weight to those URLs having keywords, this is not a big SEO Strategy but it gives you advantage over your competition in some sense. In simple rules, a good domain is easy to say and spell, descriptive and memorable.
2 – Domain Age
Domain age of the URL should be at least more than 1 year, Google has a separate database index it calls “Sandbox”, it keeps the new URLs in this database for at least 6-8 months. If you are promoting a brand new website, you should wait and see to come out of this index. On the other hand, domain should be registered for next 2-3 years; it shows trust to search engines that you are serious about your online business.
3- Directory Structure / File Name
Search engines seek keywords in URL, having a keyword based directory structure can help trigger search engines about keyword oriented pages.
4- Content
Content is everything displays on the web page, it can be images, text, links etc. keywords should be used in text, links, H1 tags, Alt tags, Link titles to improve keyword density of the website.
5- Layout Design
You should have more text content than HTML elements. No fancy stuff (Flash, Splash, Animated Gifs, Rollovers etc.) unless absolutely necessary. No frames. No JavaScript. If you need JavaScript, call it from an external file rather than dumping the code in the HTML file. JavaScript drop down menus prevent spiders from crawling beyond your homepage. If you use them, be sure to include text links at the bottom of the page.
No ads if possible. Nothing that does not fit perfectly into the page topic; There should be no doubt in the search engine’s mind (or in he user’s mind) what your page is about.
No unnecessary directories. Keep your files as close to the root as possible.
6- Page Title
Page title is very important in SEO, it has huge weight in almost every search engine on earth. You should always make use of it, and fill URLs in title. Normally the character limit in Title tags is 80, and there is no need to repeat words again and again.
7- Meta Tags
Meta tags include description tag and keyword tag apart from title tag, description tag is used for marketing purpose as it displays in search listings. While on the other hand keywords tag is used to tell search engines about your keywords.
8 – Linking
8.1 – Internal Linking
internal linking is very important in SEO; every page of your website should link to at least each other. This is like you are looking to acquire links from other websites but your family is not voting you.
Internal linking’s main part is sitemap; your sitemap should include links to all pages of your website.
8.2 – External Linking
Now, the most important part… The more external links you have for your website, the better you rank in search engines. Links can be divided by their quality not quantity, they can be categorized by PR, links on page, popularity, worth, rankings etc.
